Birthing books—and baby

So I haven't exactly been active on the blog and newsletter front lately. Forget Facebook. No time for Twitter. It's been like hibernating since last fall. Or, rather, anticipating.
But there's a reason for the hiatus. You may or may not know that the Winoca family has been awaiting the arrival of its newest member, my daughter's first child. While work on spring book projects continued apace, preparations didn't leave much mindshare for communication. And once more I'm reminded that the gestation period for a book is pretty much the same as that for a baby—no matter how much you might want to rush things.
On March 27, a week overdue, Levi Bradley Mitchell made his appearance in the world. At 8 lbs. 13 oz., he was heavier than a Victorian triple-decker or several volumes of the OED. His parents are still recovering. His grandmother notes that he's adorable and sweet and already enjoys being read to.
Levi has already inspired a book, too—a little chapbook of verses titled "What to Expect," written during the weeks leading up to his arrival.
In the quarter century since Heidi Murkoff’s original What to Expect When You’re Expecting was published, the “bible of American pregnancy” has informed and encouraged millions of parents-to-be. Now in its fourth edition, the book today is the go-to guide consulted by expectant mothers.
The iPhone has brought a new twist to the information provided by this week-by-week guide. Murkoff’s handy application calculates a countdown to the due date—and provides status updates on the stages of baby’s development.
These verses, some sweet and some silly, were inspired by the array of fruits, gradually increasing in size, that the app serves up each week for comparison. Poppyseed to watermelon in forty weeks—here is a poem to enjoy for each one (yes, there is one with an acrostic of the honoree's name!).
